Millais School

In Pursuit of Excellence

Year 11

Autumn Term

Post 16 process starts

  • October-November college open evenings take place, this is an opportunity for year 11 students to view potential places for where they want to go once they leave Millais. Most college applications need to be done before January.

School Photographer

  • School photographs are taken in October. There will be individual and tutor group photographs taken and pupils will bring home the order form.

China trip

  • This takes place in the October half term. It is done as part of an exchange with a college we have links with in Tianjin. The trips consist of a trip to the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, visiting a local family, taking part in lessons at the college and much more. This is an especially useful trip for those students who study Chinese Mandarin for their GCSE.

Charity

  • At Millais we are proud of the charity work we do. In this term year 11 will do their final charity event which is in the build up to the Christmas break after their Mocks.

GCSE Mock Examinations

  • Mocks take place in November. This is a very important part of preparation for the GCSE examinations in the summer and full attendance for them is vital. They take place in the sports hall and over roughly a 3 week period.

Parents evening

  • This takes place shortly after the mocks have happened in order to give feedback on the students’ performance in the mocks and their overall progress and achievement.

Initial Controlled Assessment Deadline

  • Towards the end of the Autumn term there is an initial set of controlled assessment deadlines. There will still be other controlled assessments after, but this is considered the first round.

Introduction to Millais Alumni Association

  • Year 11 will be introduced to the Alumni application form and we would encourage all Year 11 students to sign up this free service so we can keep in touch and hear of their successes and pathways once they leave Millais. Alumni will come into school and talk about their careers and experiences and indeed may inspire your daughters to think in different directions.

Spring Term

Practical exams

  • During this term some final practical GCSE exams take place in subjects like catering, Art, PE, Dance and Drama.

Intervention SPAs

  • Based on mock results and students overall achievements a range of intervention SPAs are run during this term. Students are asked to attend these for a fixed period of time so that early input can be made to ensure they are successful in the summer GCSE examinations.

Photograph

  • A whole year group photograph takes place in this term as does a prefect team photograph.

Examinations skills session

  • On the same day as the whole year group photograph there is a study session afternoon for the whole year group on exam revision and preparation techniques which is run by an outside organisation.

Summer Term

Year book

  • A team of students are selected to run and prepare the final year book, which is a collection of photographs and memories over the whole five years at Millais.

GCSE Examinations

  • These run over May, June and July. During this time many revision sessions are run in school to support the students’ achievement. The Examinations Officer and her team at school are on call to deal with any problems or difficulties during this time as well as the Pupil Support Team and Director of Year.

Leavers’ Assembly and Prom

  • These are both a final opportunity for form tutors, teachers, Director of Year and SLT to say goodbye to the year group and for a celebration of the 5 years students have spent at Millais.
