At Millais, we are committed to creating an environment where every student can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. As part of this commitment, we are introducing Yondr phone pouches for all students.
Our rollout began on Monday 13th July 2026, with students becoming familiar with the system before the summer holiday. The Yondr programme will then be fully implemented across the school from 1st September 2026.
The Yondr system is used successfully in schools across the UK and internationally to support focused learning, positive relationships and student wellbeing. Students lock their mobile phones in a secure Yondr pouch at the start of the school day and keep the pouch with them throughout the day. The pouch can only be unlocked at designated unlocking stations at the end of the school day or by authorised staff when required.
This initiative is not about removing technology from young people. We recognise that mobile phones are an important part of modern life. Instead, it is about creating dedicated time during the school day for learning, friendship and personal development, free from the constant distraction of notifications, messaging and social media.
At Millais, we want students to be fully present in their lessons, conversations and experiences. We want breaktimes and lunchtimes to be opportunities for students to connect with one another, participate in activities and enjoy being part of our school community.
Schools already using Yondr have reported a range of benefits, including:
- Improved focus and engagement in lessons.
- Increased face-to-face interaction between students.
- Reduced distractions during learning time.
- Greater participation in school life.
- Improved wellbeing and reduced pressure to remain constantly connected.
We are proud to be joining a growing number of schools across Sussex and the South Coast that are adopting this approach. Together, we are helping young people develop healthy digital habits while ensuring that the school day remains centred on learning, relationships and personal growth.
We look forward to working together with our students, families and staff as we take this positive step forward for the Millais community.
